Beavercreek High School: An Overview
Beavercreek High School (BHS) has an outstanding record of preparing students in grades nine through 12 for success as adults. An “Excellent” rating in 2007 Ohio Department of Education State Report Card testing underscores this accomplishment.
Academics BHS teachers and administrators seek to promote the intellectual, social, physical and creative development of all students. A challenging curriculum, with Advanced Placement, Scholarship and General courses, stimulates critical thinking, while a wide range of course offerings exposes students to the richness and complexity of global society. Character education is also emphasized, with the goal of encouraging good citizenship and decision-making. Beavercreek High School has produced 325 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists—more than any school in the Miami Valley. Students’ ACT and SAT scores are consistently well above the state and national average, and scores on the Ohio Proficiency Tests are also well above the state average at all grade levels and in all subjects tested. Ninety-four percent of seniors graduate from high school, and 90 percent go on to a college or university for post-secondary education. Each year, these students earn millions of dollars in scholarships. Facilities Beavercreek High School facilities include classrooms with video, voice and data capabilities; an instructional media center, equipped with a library and a classroom-size computer lab; a 750 seat auditorium; a 2,000 seat fieldhouse for indoor athletic competitions; a gymnasium; a football stadium; all-weather track and tennis and outdoor basketball courts; baseball and softball facilities; athletic training facilities; soccer fields; a clinic; and a land lab and garden for outdoor education. Activities Many types of extracurricular and co-curricular activities are available to students (see “Our District,” followed by “Athletics” and “Extracurricular Activities”), including athletic teams, arts organizations, academic teams and service groups. Beavercreek High School is a member of the Greater Western Ohio Conference, and its athletic teams have won state titles in cross country, girls’ basketball and girls’ bowling. It is also the home of award-winning bands and choirs and a theater program that has earned national recognition. The school is equally well represented in other extra- and co-curricular pursuits. BHS math and science academic teams are extremely competitive and regularly win regional, state and national awards, and clubs such as its chess team place in both state and national contests. Service is also encouraged, and BHS students assist with a variety of community groups’ activities, from senior citizen socials to elementary school tutoring.
