Middle Schools:  An Overview

Beavercreek’s approach to middle school education creates a small-school atmosphere where individuals in grades six through eight can flourish.  Students receive outstanding academic and social preparation for the challenges of high school with greater course selection options, increased academic rigor and many opportunities for enrichment in and beyond the classroom.

Middle school students are assigned to grade-level “teams” that follow a specific set of teachers throughout the school year.  These teachers work together to assess individual students’ strengths and weaknesses and determine the type of instruction that best meets a particular child’s needs.

The team concept also fosters collaboration among teachers, providing students with a richer, more integrated curriculum.  This collaborative approach to instruction helped both Ankeney and Ferguson middle schools earn “Excellent” ratings in 2007 Ohio Department of Education State Report Card testing.

Middle school teachers are held to high standards and strive to improve individual student achievement.  All staff participates in ongoing professional development designed to prepare them to meet the challenges established by the state of Ohio and the ever-changing demands of today’s world.

In addition to academic instruction, character education programming is emphasized at both middle schools, and students learn the importance of a core set of ethical values that include caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness.  Ankeney Middle School was a leader in these efforts, and was one of two schools in the state named a “2007 Ohio School of Character” by the Joe Nuxhall Character Foundation.  (The other was Beavercreek’s Fairbrook Elementary, which piloted the character education program for the District.)

Beavercreek middle school students’ experience is enriched by facilities that include classrooms with video, voice and data capabilities; instructional media centers, equipped with a library and a classroom-size computer lab; and multi-purpose rooms, clinics and athletic facilities.  A wide variety of sports and extracurricular activities are offered to help children experience success outside of academics.
