What to Expect This Year in Honors Language Arts 7:

Honors Reading:  You will read a collection of short stories; A Christmas Carol play; and the novels White Fang, And Then There Were None, The Outsiders, and The Lightning Thief.  You will also read novels from a variety of literature circle units related to common themes such as relationships, survival, conformity, and the Middle Ages.  Frequently, your vocabulary words, projects, and writing assignments will be closely related to what you are reading. Some of your assignments may require you to give an oral presentation and to work in groups.  Also, you will record independent reading on a reading log and will be required to do some type of book report each quarter. Last of all, you will study Greek and Latin word parts to improve your vocabulary.

Honors English:
You will complete research projects and continue your studies of writing and grammar. You will actively practice your writing through sentence combining; blogging; journaling; and writing narratives, arguments, and informative/explanatory text.  The following writing and grammar components are studied as needed:  punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech, parts of a sentence (subjects, predicates, and complements), independent clauses, subordinate clauses (noun, adverb, and adjective), and sentence structure (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences). In addition, you will actively practice and apply grammar concepts through diagramming.
