Cost Analysis - First Year of Life |
Purpose of Activity: Students will determine the costs associated with teenage pregnancy and childbirth through age 1 of the child. By showing teens the high costs involved, they may make better decisions about becoming sexually active
Description of Idea
Students will discover the cost of the following searching online sites for the answers to the following:
- Prenatal Care including tests, diagnostic ultrasound, and doctor charges for the 9 months of pregnancy.
- Hospital charges - labor/delivery and anesthesia charges
- Pediatrician charges - well/sick visits, all immunizations (average $65 per visit, with eleven visits in the first year)
- Diaper costs for one year
- Food costs for one year (formula, baby food - fruit, vegetables, cereal)
- Cost of furnishing a nursery
- Child care costs for 9 months so the mother can return to school
- Essential items such as stroller, car seat, outlet covers, high chair, etc. (Students can visit store or do searches online for prices)
- Infant and toddler clothing costs for the year
- Miscellaneous items that are needed

Cost of Living with a Child
This activity will show you how much living with a child will cost you, while having to provide necessities for yourself. Working with the budget range of $1125 per month (poverty line for a single parent with one kid) up to $1896 per month (the annual salary of someone making $10.50 an hour), provide how much you would spend per month on the following items:
